What is graphic design?

What is graphic design? Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography and illustration. It is the art and technique of using type, images, and space to create a unique and effective visual communication. Graphic designers combine text, images, color, typography and layout to create a piece that effectively communicates their message.

Graphic design has been around for centuries. The first documented use of graphic design was in ancient Egypt where artists used hieroglyphics to communicate messages on walls and tombs. However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that graphic design began to be recognized as its own discipline.

Today, graphic design is used in countless ways to communicate messages. Some common applications of graphic design include: logos, branding, marketing materials.
